Lot 4768
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 18 mm, 3.82 g, 7 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Aquileia (?), irregular mint, after 324. CONSTAN-TINVS AVG Laureate head of Constantine I to right. Rev. VIRTV-S AVGG / AQ(pellet-in-crescent) Campgate with no doors and two turrets; above, star. Minor doubling and very light roughness on the obverse, otherwise, extremely fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

The style of this coin is clearly unofficial, indicating that it is a contemporary 'barbarous' imitation. The closest parallels to the camp gate are found in Arelate and Siscia, but the fantasy mint mark indicates Aquileia.
